Amelie Mauresmo Celebrates a Second Championship Win

Amelie Mauresmo

Amelie Mauresmo is celebrating a second Advanta Championships title.

The defending champion of the 2003 tournament returned to Villanova and fought her way to the final match up in the 2004 event. This year, Mauresmo had to face a tough, rising Russian star: Vero Zvonareva for the title.

The first set went to the young Zvonareva: 6-3. But patience, focus and experience proved to be in Mauresmo's favor. The frenchwoman answered with two decisive set wins to capture the match: 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Hometown favorite Lisa Raymond also found her way back into the winner's circle this year. Raymond and her partner Alicia Molik captured the 2004 Advanta Championships Doubles title over their opponents Lizel Huber and Corina Morariu.

The 2004 Advanta Championships provided a full week of thilling tennis for Philly tennis fans. Veterans like Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati drew large crowds. Another crowd favorite was Maria Sharapova, who unfortunately pulled out of the tournament late on Friday with a shoulder injury.
