Lower Merion Senior Wins State Championship

State Champ

George Mayer's name flies high above the rafters in the Lower Merion HS gymnasium along with the likes of Lower Merion grad and NBA star Kobe Bryant!

In May, Mayer became the first male player in his school's history to win an individual state tennis championship. He beat Scott Kahler from Thomas Jefferson to win the Class AAA tournament in Altoona: 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm in good company with Kobe Bryant now," Mayer said. "This has been unbelievable. It's the highlight of my tennis career".

Mayer earned the right to compete in the state championships after he first captured the district title in the District I PIAA AAA tournament at Healthplex.

A second Philly High School player, Christ Louis of Henderson HS in West Chester, finished 3rd in the state competitions.
