Local USTA Jr. Team Tennis Team Heads to Nationals!

The Split Steps, who play out of Radnor Valley Country Club in Villanova, PA will be playing for a National Championship October 18-20 in South Carolina.  The team is a 14 and under Intermediate team that won their local league, District Championships and Section Championships in the 2013 Championship Year.  Head coach Ruth Dickinson says, “It's been a great experience over the last two years to coach and develop a group of players who have come together and stayed together. The whole team has been playing JTT tennis coming through the 12s where some of them played their first competitive matches and into the 14s age group. We not only saw some amazing team sacrifices to be available for sectionals but to also make themselves available for every league match possible at the beginning of the season. The best part about this team is that we have not recruited outside of our program - all these players are home grown, raw talent and every player is really proud to be part of the team and what they have been able to achieve so far.”

They started out more than a year ago, playing in the Fall 2012 Philadelphia Area USTA Jr. Team Tennis League.  That team went undefeated, and while had stuck together as a team for the winter and spring seasons, had chose to use the team to play at Districts and Section Championships which they had also won.

USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a nationwide program that allow players to play on teams against other teams.  At the local level, there are leagues in the Philadelphia that run in all different seasons.  The Split Steps are the first team to advance to a National Championship from the Philadelphia Area Jr. Team Tennis League.

Coach Jane Frantz says, “I expect them all to give it their best! Going to Nationals is the pinnacle of playing JTT.  As I told them at Districts and at Sectionals "Someone has to win this - there's no reason it can't be us. "

As for the other players, they have this to say:

Amy: I enjoy competing as a team and not worrying about myself--because there's no "i" in "team." I want to go to Nationals and win!

Parker: I hope that we win but definitely want to make the top 4 teams. I want to do it for Ruth and the club because you never know when you'll get to go back.

Jonathan: enjoys playing as a team alot.

Ethan: likes playing with everyone else and wants to win and meet other players

Cassidy: I  enjoy being part of a team with my friends, I'm going to Nationals to play as hard as she can and I hope it's fun.

Sofia: It's really fun playing with my friends. And I'm going to Nationals hoping to win!

Sam: I want to enjoy every part of it at a National Level. It's great because everyone will have an opportunity to know Radnor tennis is one of the best in the nation.  I want to go to Nationals, play hard and have fun.

Best of Luck to the team at Nationals!
