Methacton and New Hope Shine Among District 1 Winners

The PIAA District 1 Girls Tennis Championship Season closed out in mid-October with excitement.

Despite a few days of rain, the AAA team competition ended with Methacton winning 3 matches in a row 3-2 to take home the title.  They started in the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win over Harriton, then beat 2nd seeded Unionville in the Semi-Final and Conestoga in the final.  Conestoga has beaten fellow Chester County Powerhouse West Chester Henderson 4-1 in their semi-final.  All 4 semi-finalist advanced to the state tournament, where Methacton placed 2nd!

In the AA division, New Hope also kept it close with a 3-2 win in the semifinals and then a 3-2 win over Nazareth in the final.

The doubles was just as exciting.

Amanda Cyr and Kristi Kong from Central Bucks West paired up to win the AAA doubles title.  Only seeded 5th, they won all their matches 2 sets with notable wins over 4th seeded Lauren Banner/Lipika Gadila from Conestoga and 1st seeded  Molly Bair/ Amirah Salem-Bey from Abington.  They ended up beating Katherine Devlin/Christie Cesarini from Wissahickon in the Final 7-6 (4), 6-3.

The Villa Maria team of Danielle Rufus/ Haley Noll won the AA division doubles, also not losing a set en route to a victory over Lissie Shubin/Allison Oblon from Lower Moreland in the final.

The top seeds came through in the singles bracket of the AAA division.  In the top half, Christina Kaiser breezed through her section and beat Maureen Devlin from Wissahickon in the semi-final after beating her Maureen’s sister Katherine in the quarters.  Then Methacton struck again with Mihaela Codreanu beating Zaina Zaki in the bottom semi-final.  Kaiser won the final 6-3, 7-6 (2).

Last, but certainly not least, New Hope got another District 1 Title with top seeded Gen Hobson advancing to the final and beating Alex Vo from Nazareth 6-1, 6-0.

The PIAA state singles and doubles championships will be held at Hershey Racquet Club November 1st-2nd.

Congratulations to all that played and especially our champions.
