Mike Barrell conducts Workshop for AAYTE. Frog Hollow, NJTL Pros

June 1, 2012 03:51 PM
Mike Barrell, world renowned Ten and Under Expert visited the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center (AAYTE) to conduct a workshop not only for AAYTE staff, but also the staff of the Frog Hollow Racket Club. This day long workshop was filled with hands on learning, new and innovative drills for the ten and under population, and candid conversations with Mike about the growth of the game and its impact on this specific demographic of player. Lance Lee, AAYTE VP of Tennis and National Partnerships and Frog Hollow owner Harold Conway have a long standing friendship that dates back to when Lance was a junior player at Arthur Ashe and Harold was the Head Pro.   The two have stayed in touch over the years and regularly set up match play exchanges between their players and assist each other’s clubs whenever possible. When the opportunity to get Mike Barrell for the day arose, Lance immediately thought of sharing this opportunity with the staff at Frog.

There were several pros on hand from the National Junior Tennis League as well. This is a summer program that operates out of 35 Parks and Recs Programs throughout the City of Philadelphia. The majority of participants are beginners under the age of ten. The NJTL program has lightly implemented the Ten and Under curriculum in past summers, however, this summer the program delivery is sticking strictly to the Quickstart/Ten and Under format. The information that was received during this workshop will certainly help in making this transition easier.

This workshop not only was another step in growing Ten and Under Tennis, but it was also nice of two clubs coming together for a common goal, growing the game of tennis.
