Public League and Catholic League Championships Compete for PIAA District 12 Title

PIAA District 12 is comprised of teams that compete in 2 leagues- the Catholic League, which consists of private and Catholic schools in and around the Philadelphia area, and the Public League which is comprised of the Philadelphia Public High Schools.

In the doubles competition, Emma Lipshutz and Maianh Nguyen of Masterman won the AA public league title, while Alyssa Hoos and Madeline Smith of Lansdale Catholic won the Catholic League.

In a close match, the Masterman team beat the Lansdale Catholic duo 6-3, 6-4 to also take the District 12 title and advance to the state tournament.  As for AAA division, Archbishop Carroll’s 2 seniors Rachel Tygh and Stef Barkowski won the Catholic League, and then defeated Eryn Nguyen and Chelsea Stone of Central 7-5, 6-4.  Nguyen and Stone had won the Public League title.

In singles, Lansdale Catholic bounced back with Nicole Bartle winning the AA Catholic League crown and then beating Katherine Laboda of Masterman and Public League AA Champion 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.  Central High School’s Devi Majeske won the Public League AAA singles title, but it wasn’t enough to beat Julianne Herman from Archbishop Ryan who had won the Catholic League.  Herman and Bartle then advanced to the PIAA state tournament.

As far as the team tournament, most of the same teams from singles and doubles, did just as well with team competition.  Lansdale Catholic defeated Archbishop Carroll for the Catholic League title, and Masterman defeated Central for the Public League Championships.  As for the District 12 crowns, the Catholic League teams proved too strong with Lansdale Catholic beating Mastermann 3-2 to take the AA, and Carroll defeating Central 4-1 for AAA.

Congrats to all teams!
